Alphabet, Google's holding company the Alphabet conglomerate is set to invest $15 billion for constructing an artificial intelligence data center in southern India's Andhra Pradesh state.
The infrastructure, to be established in the coastal city of Visakhapatnam city, is going to be a part of the worldwide network of Google of AI centers located in 12 countries.
"It stands as the greatest AI hub that we are committing funds to across the globe, excluding the US," Google Cloud's chief executive stated at an conference in the capital city of Delhi recently, mentioning that the funding will be allocated across the coming five years.
The revelation arrives during a period President Trump of the United States has been urging companies from the United States to focus on investments within the country.
India has emerged as a major hub for AI data centres. The nation's affordable data pricing and quickly expanding online population have turned it into a center for cloud and AI expansion for major tech firms.
"The infrastructure will introduce our cutting-edge technology to companies and individuals in India, speeding up AI innovation and promoting progress nationwide," commented Sundar Pichai, CEO of Alphabet.
A formal agreement to finalise the venture will be signed this Tuesday, local government officials said.
"It constitutes a massive leap for the digital progression of our state, technological innovation, and international reputation," said the technology official Nara Lokesh, the technology minister.
The venture will combine computing and artificial intelligence facilities with green energy infrastructure and an expanded fibre-optic network.
The venture is included in the local administration's blueprint to develop 6GW of data center capability by the year 2029.
Data centres are physical facilities that house the networking and computing devices that entities use to gather, analyze, save, and share information.
They contain computer servers, storage systems and networking hardware like routers and firewalls, combined with the necessary power and cooling systems to operate them.
Across Andhra Pradesh, the government has been offering reduced-cost property and energy to attract global investors.
The country's computing facility market has grown rapidly over the past five years, exceeding the 1GW capacity mark in 2024 and nearly tripling its capability from 2019.
