The winter game drop for the block-building phenomenon has touched down — and it features the initial fresh armament introduced into the game since the heavy club made its debut. The spear is finally here and it might just revolutionize your approach to Minecraft, especially if you thrive on pandemonium.
The Mayhem Mounts drop also adds several new features and enhancements focused on animal mounts in the game. That central theme made the spear the perfect fit for this release, as the development team had long felt it was the moment to introduce a new weapon.
"We knew initially that we wanted a new weapon that would increase combat distance, and we designed it specifically for fighting from atop a creature," stated a senior product manager. "We tried out a number of concepts, but the lance was the one that both played wonderfully when we ran our trials and also was visually fitting for the use case."
If you're curious whether mounted combat means you can joust against your friends on horseback, the answer is a definite affirmative. In fact, there's even an offensive action ideally crafted for it.
"[Jousting on horses is a primary functions for the spear, and it's so much fun," the developer says. "The spear has two attacks: You have the thrust, where you simply impale your enemy. But you also have a charge attack where you couch your lance and deal increased harm [with] the more pace you have. So [it’s] ideal for jousting on horses."
The wild enjoyment can extend beyond there, though. If you're far enough into the game that you've been to The End, the developers have an delightfully absurd idea. "If you are quite advanced, [spears are] ideal for equipping the wings and taking to the skies and making some real mayhem," she hints.
In other words: Sky jousting is now a reality, and it deserves to be an competitive event immediately.
Another major addition in this new update is the underwater mount. This aquatic being, which is based on the seashells players have gathered for years, can be domesticated and ridden for underwater travel. Not only will it move you through the water quicker than swimming, it'll also preserve your air supply, so there's no requirement to return to the surface for oxygen.
The remaining new features are mostly things that seek your demise, as is the way of Minecraft. Naturally, there's also a undead nautilus spawning in the water, sometimes with a zombie villager on its back. If you succeed in defeat the Drowned, though, you can befriend the zombie Nautilus — or the regular one, for that matter — with a blowfish.
"We've long considered this challenge for some time, and again, like with the spear and [adding] more mounts, it appeared to be the ideal opportunity to also introduce something for underwater," the lead clarifies. "For the Nautilus in particular, we had a few different ideas for sea mounts that we wanted to test, but the Nautilus concept art looked compelling, and we have the connection to the Nautilus shell that was already in the game."
She also adds that there are actually two distinct kinds of zombie Nautilus: standard and coral-infested undead mount. "[The variants] provide diversity to what you discover underwater."
Further inclusions include the Parched, desert-exclusive undead archers that can endure the sun, which means there's no refuge from them if you find yourself in that region. Sometimes you'll see them on desiccated dromedaries, another new mob. These passive, zombified camels have an excellent design that sees their bones protruding. The same goes for zombie horses, who have a analogous rib-popping design and can sometimes be encountered after dark with a lance-wielding zombie on their back.
The remaining updates on the drop's list are smaller gameplay updates, including some much-anticipated changes to equestrian travel. Now, you can traverse rivers and lakes while mounted on a horse. Additionally, netherite horse armor is now obtainable at the workbench, so you can provide your steed with the ultimate protection it is worthy of.
In summary, the final game drop of the year is a notable addition. The spear alone — and the mayhem it enables — would have constituted a significant enhancement. Throw in the Nautilus, and more things seeking your end, and Minecraft's definitely getting a bit spicier.
